SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #1 Review

Two of the New 52’s biggest icons are teaming up for a continual crossover, but is it worthwhile or just a shameless cash-in?  Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

Beginning a bold new series that details the relationship between The Man of Steel and the Warrior Princess as rising star writer Charles Soule is joined by fan favorite artist Tony S. Daniel to tell the tale of a romance that will shake the stars themselves. These two super-beings love each other, but not everyone shares their joy. Some fear it, some test it—and some will try to kill for it. Some say love is a battlefield, but where Superman and Wonder Woman are concerned it spells Doomsday!

It’s an epic first entry that points out the strength and vulnerability of two mammoth titans.  If there are people in this universe that would be revered among any other its this pair, but the question remains: will their secret relationship lead to more trouble than good.

I found that the script by Charles Soule turned out to be a solid interpretation of both of these franchises. He found enough meat to establish a common thread, develop a problem and present something that might in the end have serious ramifications for the rest of this shared universe.  There were some off moments here and there where the dialogue felt a bit awkward, but when these two icons faced a situation together the scribe nailed it.

Tony S. Daniel handles the art and I have to say he does a wondrous job.  His style doesn’t rely on an overabundance of line work, but rather subtle details that complement some very traditional perspectives still held in the realm of DC Comics. Near the end, I was captivated by the work on display as the revelation of what caused such an initial ruckus came face to face with one of our heroes.

Superman/Wonder Woman #1 is a strong but slightly rocky beginning that could be a welcome landscape for audience members that yearn for more adventures with Diana Prince and Clark Kent.  Recommended.
