Super Dinosaur #13 Review

Sometimes you just want to open a comic book to see a bunch of kids and a talking dinosaur searching for another kid with a talking reptilian thing. If you haven’t been reading this arc of Super Dinosaur, you’ve been missing out. The previous issues in the story have been fantastic. This is mainly thanks to the greatly written ‘antagonist,’ the Exile. In the latest installment we find out some really interesting details as the story gets closer to its conclusion. While it may use the terms ‘cool’ and ‘awesome’ a bit too much, it’s still not an issue to miss.

Here’s the official description from Image:

“ESCAPE FROM INNER-EARTH,” Part Two

As The Exile runs test after test on Derek Dynamo, Super Dinosaur and friends meet the natives of Inner-Earth. That’s right – it’s Super Dinosaur versus actual Dinosaurs! Who will win?!

Making the issue this time was a splash page with two giant Spinosauruses about to eat SD. That page needs to become a poster. This issue is divided between the Exile and Derek in the former’s underground home and the kids/SD looking for them in the dinosaur-owned Inner-Earth. The interesting part of course is with the Exile and as we learn more on the deeper story at work. The writing ranged from being great to just stuff you’d normally read in an all-ages title. The dialogue sequence with the Exile was fantastic, the generic part in the writing is with the kids and SD.

The art is pretty much what you’d expect from an all-ages title. Nothing of great caliber, but good enough. What I’ve been liking his how well-written the Exile is. He’s not a generic evil villain, proof of that is seen here. Surprisingly the book’s main character Derek is pushed to the side for the Exile’s story. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, since the ‘Reptiloid’ has been stealing the show.

Overall, a pretty good issue of Super Dinosaur. Not quite as good as the previous few, but it continues the story at a nice pace. With a great cliffhanger, I await the next issue with anticipation. (Spinosaurues, that’s the stuff.)
