Star Wars: Dark Times – Fire Carrier #5 Review

With the Empire baring down, can there be any hope for our wayward Jedi and the younglings in their charge?  Should you even care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Jedi Master K’Kruhk’s fight with militia soldiers comes to an abrupt end—with the appearance of not one, but two unexpected allies. The refuge he and his Padawans have sought may be in sight… but a shadow from within their own ranks bodes a perilous future.

In the Star Wars universe there are certainly many stories about lost souls caught in a struggle that’s both bleak and depressing in all the right perspectives.  In a lot of ways that’s what this era between the two trilogies represents, as the aptly named Dark Times barrels toward yet another mini-series conclusion.  The seeds are indeed sown for wherever the property might want to go from here.

Randy Stradley finishes this latest slice of intergalactic pie with a mostly content ending that may not seem like a realistic possibility but it occurs anyways.  I found myself nonetheless gleefully flipping pages as the author brought the good and the bad of this era to the fore in the right ways as everyone met their destinies in one way or another.  He made an ancillary character a hero and quickly created a brooding shadow while tying everything up in a nice bow, that right there is a job well done in my book as this seasoned professional delivers something worthwhile.

The art by Gabriel Guzman is exactly on the level of the narrative.  I have no other way to say it because I was simply floored by the delicate features and subtle details that simply popped off the page in a way that made this rendition of the franchise inviting.  The illustrations found here had some awkward moments but random inconsistencies were far to infrequent to cause any lasting damage to the overall package.

Star Wars: Dark Times – Fire Carrier #5 is an excellent release that should be in the hands of every fanboy or fangirl in the galaxy.  Highly recommended.
