The Star Wars #0 Review

The Star Wars Banner

As this resurrected and re-imagined version of the intergalactic space opera continues, is this an additional comic that needs to exist?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

A companion to the eight-issue adaptation of The Star Wars, this is an exclusive peek behind the scenes at the designs that have brought a new—yet incredibly familiar—galaxy to life.

Included in this volume are the never-before-seen comics sequences that were used in Dark Horse’s pitch to George Lucas!

The Star Wars 1_CWhat we have is a release that screams: if you haven’t been reading this awesome title than here’s a way to figure out just what is going on!  And I have to say from that specific stand point, this is an absolutely necessary purchase that could easily garner some deserved attention.  Bonus features highlight the thought and commitment behind this dedicated team and I can’t help but muster a grin for them.

The text by Jonathan Rinzler and Randy Stradley highlights the prominent features of this new opus. They explain origins and design decisions, as the reasons for both how and why we find familiar but different characters within this book come into focus. It’s fun to follow, and as this is not a traditional comic I just found myself gleefully absorbed by its somewhat intimate look within the already printed pages.  Let it be known I am a sucker for watching the creative process unfold and this little glimpse was right up my alley.

Mike Mayhew, Sean Cooke, Kilian Plunkett, Stéphane Roux and Scott Kolins handle the art from the first renditions to the final panels. The bulk of what we see is striking, as we view the formation or rather reformation of familiar story elements from a beloved saga that’s known the world over. Again, this is not typical but it kept me very entertained with its honest flow.  In short: sit back and enjoy the visual barrage.

The force of others is indeed strong with The Star Wars #0, and if you’re aching to know more about this franchise than this is perfectly suited for you.  Recommended.
