Star Trek #12 Review

Will the intrepid cast and crew of the USS Enterprise survive their latest adventure?  Should you care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

The conclusion of “The Truth About Tribbles!” With production underway on next year’s blockbuster STAR TREK sequel, the countdown continues here in the pages of the hit series overseen by the film’s writer/producer Roberto Orci! The classic episode “The Trouble With Tribbles” is re-imagined as part of the timeline of the new films!

When the Star Trek reboot hit theaters, it was only a matter of time before the space adventures found some avenue for continued exploration.  In this monthly comic book series, we get to experience new mini-sagas inspired by and adapted from the original television show.  The latest two-part arc is based off of an episode from the second season and the results are fascinating.

The meat of the story is rather light, but the movie references alone solidify this as an entertaining distraction as Mike Johnson delivers a whimsical but fun script.  He successfully gives readers a solid enough narrative that will entertain from start to finish, but one that ultimately lacks any depth.  The dialogue and character interaction flows just as well as it did in theaters, but there are times where an overabundance of explanation bogs down the pace to the point where it may bore some eager readers.

Claudia Balboni does a fine job capturing both a passing likeness of the film characters while adapting their distinct personalities.  The look and feel of the artistic vision takes ques from both established nuances and a simplistic sense that yields both strong forms and interesting environments.  It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but the clean crisp panels and simple but distinct forms work well enough to make any fan of the 2009 remake happy.

Star Trek #11 is a fun romp that will easily appeal to movie fans the enjoyed the J.J. Abrams directed flick.  Recommended.
