SEX #2 Review

We have always been told, “never judge a book by it’s cover.” But it’s will take an almost herculean effort not to do just that with SEX. Issue two screams it on the cover with shadow covering all the naughty bits. The aforementioned does hold true though. You can expect sex inside these pages but read it through and you’ll see it’s a whole lot more to it.

Official description from IMAGE:

Simon Cooke’s journey into the underbelly of Saturn City continues. Think about it… how repressed would YOU be after waging a war on crime for the entirety of your adult life? What happens when the superhero power fantasy finally ends?

As issue two unfolds we get to see more layers to all the major players. Simon Cooke reflects on his retirement with more than just a little regret. We also get more detail on his relationship with brothel owner Annabelle Lagravenese who was also once Cooke’s nemesis “Shadow Lynx”. She’s no more convinced of his retirement than he is. We also get quite the action sequence with Keenan Wade and quite the disturbing insight into gangster “The Old Man”.

Writer Joe Casey has grabbed our attention with a provocative title that lives up to it’s name. But he is also weaving a tale that is a slow burn toward a much larger whole. The dialogue is sharp and the interior monologues reach deep within each characters psyche. These are complex characters dealing with changing roles in their lives and it’s not always pretty. Piotr Kowalski’s art knows how to capture a characters expression and you can feel Simon Cooke’s stress, a gangsters evil or a rebel’s determination. He handles static environments, action sequences and, yes, even actual sex with equal skill.

SEX is peeling off layers as slowly and as engaging as any show girl in Annabelle’s club and I am more than willing to watch. But it’s also much more than you expect. Simon Cooke’s move into retirement will not be easy as more than one player is pulling his strings. He has superhuman willpower in the face of sex being literally laid at his feet but in the end it may be his undoing. If you are easily offended then this might not be the book for you but if good storytelling is paramount than give SEX a try.
