SDCC: DC’s Superman Panel

Shane Davis talked about the upcoming Superman: Earth One: Volume 2, which picks up almost immediately after Volume 1, with Clark trying to fit into the office environment and trying to establish a strong persona for his secret identity.

He also revealed new art for the Parasite. This version of the Parasite has three stages. In the panel we saw stage 2, where Parasite has clumps of yellow pustules on his arms and shoulders, which store the power he absorbs. This Parasite can also absorb power directly out of the air. Superman will also suffer in his fights with Parasite due to his reliance on brute strength and lack of real  fighting skills.

Scott Lobdell said that Superman #0 shows Clark’s father, Jor-El, discover that Krypton is doomed on the same night that his wife announces she is pregnant. Lobdell also said that he wrote a 25 page treatment for how he would adapt classic villains like Bizarro and Toyman to the New 52 universe. He also said that he views the Clark persona as Superman’s id. As Superman, he has to be careful about everything he says and does, because everyone is watching him. But as Clark, he can be more adventurous and rock the boat a bit more with what he says.

Lobdell was joined by editor Matt Idelson in talking about Superboy (Lobdell is leaving the title in September). The zero issue will explore the status of clones on Krypton, and explain why Kara (Supergirl) reacted to Superboy the way she did back in issue 6.  With the new creative team on Superboy starting in October, the boy of steel will face bigger threats than in the first year of the series. Those who have been waiting so see Superboy really get his butt kicked should read this new arc.

Action Comics #0 will look at Clark’s first adventure as Superman, while Action Comics #13 will be set in the present day, not five years ago, and will show what happened to Krypto.

Mike Johnson talked about Supergirl #0, which will finally show what happened to Kara as Krypton was dying, and will feature a different family dynamic than the traditional Jor-El/Lara/Kal-El family unit. Supergirl  #13 will show Kara’s new “Fort of Solitude” which is her sanctum and an attempt on her part to create her on little piece of Krypton on Earth. It also functions as a sensory deprivation chamber, of sorts, as Kara still can’t completely control all her hearing and vision powers.

Q&A Potpourri: Superboy will be getting a new costume soon, and Superman’s costume will see a few modifications in Superman: Earth 1: Volume 2. It was also mentioned that Superman will not be acting as a mentor to Supergirl or Superboy any time soon. Concerning Lex Luthor, Shane Davis said he had no comment on Luthor. Or Luthors (wink, wink). Scott Lobdell said he had proposed new ideas for Luthor, and that, depending on if they passed editorial, it would something completely new for the character.
