Screwed #5 Review

The penultimate issue to this volume has arrived, but does it carry enough weight to make the entire series worthwhile?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

This is the issue not to miss! A demon from the past appears to threaten Erin’s sanity. Anne attempts to reach out to the life she once knew but can she get past the monster she’s become?  Meanwhile the main event that fans have been asking for since issue 1, Agent Simon and Suture face off and only one will walk away! As if that’s not enough, the stage is set for the explosive finale as the mysterious puppeteer who has been pulling the strings is finally revealed!

When a name like Tyler Kirkham is thrown around, fans of horror are bound to be instantly engaged. Thankfully this creative team doesn’t waste that fact as this re-telling of Frankenstein barrels toward its conclusion.

Keith Thomas pens the script and I can honestly say this is his best work to date.  From the first page to the final panel the scribe uses dialogue and shock value to punch his audience in the metaphorical gut. Anne has been through a lot since she charged up and came on the scene, but now she’s reached a point where she’s evolved into a frightful force that’s bound to take on some creatures that go bump in the night.  By the end we’re offered some minor bits of back story in an issue that screams forward momentum.

The art by David Miller is certainly a highlight, as the talent offers up renditions that are perfectly tailored to the mechanics of the saga.  But as pretty as the panels can be there were some off moments that left the end result a bit hindered.  Actions in the scenes offered exploitative stances and scenarios that just didn’t feel natural to the whole of the situation, and there were times that the details felt inconsistent.

Screwed #5 is a potent entry that has some cosmetic bruises along the way. Despite that the bulk of the release still earns my recommendation.
