Scarlet Spider #7 Review

The adventures of the new Scarlet Spider continue, but is this clone of Peter Parker worth picking up?  Read on.

The official description from Marvel:

When Houston based mega-corporation Roxxon is attacked, Scarlet Spider finds himself right in the middle of it…defending Roxxon?

Without missing a beat, this latest issue of Scarlet Spider continues Kaine Parker‘s adventures in Texas while adding a few more wrinkles to the mix.  From an ominous intro to an exciting cliffhanger, this latest release is chock-full of personality from start to finish.  It’s not the best issue of the series, but it is a very entertaining read.

The script in this latest issue is completely character driven, and Christopher Yost succeeds in giving Kaine a unique personality that will make any fan root for this ever-evolving superhero.  It’s not easy to take someone who used to be an antagonist to Spider-Man, and put him on a path where he’s not only trying to be a superhero but also live up to a man he realizes he will never equal.  That’s the genius of this character and it makes for a fun and fascinating read.

Despite the departure of series artist Ryan Stegman, the art in this latest issue fits the book fairly well.  Credit must go to Khoi Pham, who succeeds in pulling off a visual style that offers a decent transition while avoiding a jarring effect.  It fits right-in with the rest of the established world, making the continuation of these characters and their stories workable.  Thinly detailed but dynamic designs exentuate the landscape of Houston, Texas yielding a sturdy look that when combined with the script creates a solid read.

Overall this is a very good comic book that continues the already established narrative elements, while exploring this engaging corner of the Marvel universe.  Recommended.
