Saga #18 Review

saga bannerFor the most part, Saga has been about avoiding conflict where possible. Yet Saga #18 demonstrates that classic situation, where you’re stuck on a lighthouse as a Robot-prince wants to kill you. Oh, and there’s a giant blue cat, too.

The official description from Image:

Our heroes’ stay on Quietus reaches its inevitable conclusion.

Saga is a title consistently praised by critics for being exceptionally unique and it’s no different here. This issue starts off looking like a big action sequence, yet ultimately comes to a satisfying conclusion. When I say conclusion, it almost suggests the end of a ‘Year One’ of sorts for Saga, Saga 18with certain things coming to a satisfying end – for now, at least. If there’s one thing that I always expect from Saga, it’s the unexpected. Saga #18 offers surprise twists, little tidbits of information and anything else that fans could be looking for.

Similarly, Brian K Vaughan demonstrates his skills with set pieces and the wider plot. Admittedly, this issue takes place in one location more or less, so it may seem like a much simpler task this month. However, credit must be given in handling so much within so little while making it feel natural, organic and dynamic.

Likewise, the art continues to bring its A game. With robots, ghosts, magic cats and everything in between, its safe to say Fiona Staples has a large creative license – something which seldom goes to waste on a title like this. Yet, despite this, the detail on the regular cast is just as impressive, with simple facial expressions and gestures being enough to demonstrate panic, anger and countless other shifting emotions.

Finally, some may have strong words about this issue. Some characters look like they are taking a break and some new arcs may be on the horizon, which may come as a dramatic shift all at once. Progress is always good, but it’s only the very the best titles that leave you talking about it while eagerly awaiting the next month.
