Robyn Hood: Wanted #1 Review

The sequel to the hit Robyn Hood series is finally here. Does it open up with the same level of fun and quality we’ve come to expect? There’s plenty of good stuff to be found, it looks like we’re in for another enjoyable ride.

Here’s the official description from Zenescope:

Robyn Hood returns in this new, epic story arc! As a mysterious villain calling himself ‘the Sheriff’ begins to terrorize Nottingham, the people that Robyn once liberated are again in need of her help. But with the police searching for her on Earth, Robyn has her own problems. Can Robyn rise up and be the hero that Nottingham needs, or will she be forced to face the consequences of her own actions? Find out in the sequel to the fan favorite series, Robyn Hood: Wanted!

The last time we saw Robyn she was battling Red Riding Hood in what was one of the most fun comics I’ve ever read. The first series was a very intriguing take on the classic legend. It took a familiar concept and spun it in a whole new direction. I dare say Robyn is far cooler than the original! *Dodges thrown tomato from purists.* Wanted has been highly anticipated. What we have is a solid first issue that acts as an opening and catching up for new readers.

Patrick Shand once again pens the script. Robyn is one of the greatest ‘modern’ comic protagonists, this issue is an example of this. She has a very interesting moral complex later. Her narration also naturally carries the issue through. She realizes that having a normal life just doesn’t click and she actually likes her Robyn Hood persona. The best part is the dialogue between her and her father. The writing successfully makes the reader truly dislike this guy. The dialogue between them doesn’t disappoint. Now, the interesting thing is that there are segments of what’s happening over at Bree. It’s cool since we see how far the land has come and what’s up with the Merry Men. A new antagonist is also established. So far he’s pretty decent, I’ll need to see more of him before making a judgement.

Larry Watts is back with the art. There are no real complaints to be said, everything and everyone looks fine. A standout is definitely the first appearance of ‘the Sheriff,’ with his head cocked sideways it gave him a menacing demeanor early on. The action is solid too. The main cover is a great shot of Robyn with her bow in front of a New York City backdrop. The variants are good, but don’t quite compete with the main cover.

Overall, a solid opening issue of Wanted. It’s not the most exciting Robyn Hood issue, but it nicely sets things up for what’s to come. Readers of the original title will definitely want to jump on, and new readers shouldn’t worry about catching up, pick up this fun comic.
