Can Velvet continue to be a rip roaring series as the second arc gets under way? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

THE SECOND ARC BEGINS HERE! Following the revelations at the end of issue 5, Velvet’s quest for the truth and her innocence takes her right back to the heart of her own organization—to London, where every move she makes is even more dangerous than the last!

Velvet06_Page4Velvet has been a thrilling spy ride so far with the deception and mystery being very morish. This theme continues in this issue as with the second arc kicking off we see our deadly female protagonist search for the person who framed her. Narrowing it down to someone within the agency. We’re also treated to a look into Velvet’s past seeing why she transitioned from field agent to secretary.

Ed Brubaker has been writing some his best work since focusing on creator owned material with this spy thriller being up there. In this issue he focuses mainly on developing Velvet’s characteristics as though her basic personality has been established we get so much more depth to her as a person and her goals. In addition to this Brubaker also gives us some fabulous character interaction and along with the explosive climax it made for yet another gripping issue.

Much like Brubaker has been upping his game since turning creator-owned so has Steve Epting with his art. Having done stunning work on Captain America and New Avengers it was surprising to see such an increase in quality but that’s exactly what we get. The flow between panels is ultra sleek with the dynamic almost feeling cinematic. Epting also manages to capture character expression perfectly and along with the elaborate scenery it brings fabulous atmosphere. The colours from Elizabeth Breitweiser also add a dark and alluring tone enhancing the already brilliant art.

Velvet‘s second arc kicks off in an epic fashion with Velvet Templeton getting closer to finding the person who framed her. Highly recommended.
