Umbral #7 Review

Umbral has returned but can this second act top the first? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

“KILLING THE SUNRISE” BOOK TWO STARTS HERE! Rascal has escaped the Umbral in the city (uh, spoilers?) and now she heads for the mountainous Sunrise homestead. But even here not everyone is who they seem, and before the dawn a blade will flash in the dark…

Umbral07_Review-18The first arc of Umbral proved very thrilling and unique as though far from perfect it did a terrific job of introducing this new fantasy world and it’s characters. This second arc follows very much in them footsteps as despite being a little underwhelming overall it does introduce some new concepts. Nonetheless the developments along with the tense cliffhanger have me excited for the rest of the story.

Antony Johnston does a fantastic job of kicking off this new arc as though it’s yet to show the same kind of energy and excitement that I enjoyed from the first it does prove relatively new reader friendly. Despite the lack of energy the issue still proved intriguing with the the set-up work and other developments proving to be very teasing. We also get some fabulous dialogue with the character interaction along with the climax proving very thrilling.

Christopher Mitten has build a fabulous world of fantasy in this series as though Johnston has created the tone and character personalities it’s Mitten that has refined the look. In this second arc he continues to deliver the kind of rough and intense art that I loved from the previous with the layouts also giving a dynamic flair to the story. Mitten also manages to give us some truly captivating sequences with events in the Umbral being stunning. Rounding things off Jordan Boyd‘s painted colours once again prove sensational with his mixed pallet giving a wonderful finish.

Umbral‘s second arc gets off to a terrific start as though it’s still some work to match the first it’s teasing some enticing developments. Recommended.
