Ultimate Spider-Man #200 Review

Will this celebratory issue be fitting for such an amazing series? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

  • The world mourns on the anniversary of Peter Parker’s death
  • A gathering of Spidey’s friends and foes reveal some shocking truths about Peter and his world
  • One of the biggest surprise endings of the year!

Ultimate Spider-Man #200 variantUltimate Spider-Man has always been the benchmark for the Ultimate Universe as though there have been other great Ultimate tales the Ultimate Spider-Man has been the only series to stay consistently good since the start. In this 200th issue we see Peter’s friends and current Spider-Man Miles Morales gather and pay tribute to the fallen hero.

Brian Michael Bendis may get mixed criticism over many of his series and I admittedly have criticised him myself, but one series that he’s never failed to impress me with is Ultimate Spider-Man. Ever since #1 he has given excitement and fun on a completely new level. With this 200th issue Bendis gives a touching tribute to the late Ultimate Peter Parker. I honestly hadn’t realised it had been two years already but with this fitting tribute coming just before the launch of the new series it proved a nice chance to reminisce and look into the future. Despite this a small part of me questioned whether this was worthy enough for an landmark issue and though overall it is, it is so marginally and not overly special.

Dave Marquez handles the majority of the art on this celebratory issue with former Ultimate Spider-Man artists David Lafuente, Sara Pichelli, Mark Brooks and Mark Bagley doing additional artwork. Overall it was nice to see all these former (and present) Ultimate Spider-Man artists together as with the series being relatively young yet having amassed 200 issues it allows the rare opportunity of having every artists who’s worked on the series feature. It was however Marquez that stood out and I am happy that he’s been the main artist as of late as despite all the other artists being true talents Marquez’ style suits Miles Morales unlike any other.

Ultimate Spider-Man #200 is a fitting tribute to the fallen Ultimate Peter Parker, also managing to cap off this era of Ultimate Spider-Man nicely. Highly recommended.
