Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #36 Review

Our heroes in a half-shell face a bit of crossroads. Do they go after the villainous Oroku Saki or the Technodrome? Should you care? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

Leonardo and Splinter plan for the coming war with Shredder. As they meditate on what their true path must be, they are engulfed by darkness. And from that darkness emerges… the Rat King! Will his meddling with their minds lead to salvation or madness?

TMNT 36_Preview PageThis issue gives us a strong focus, while a new threat rises from the shadows. The creative team knows exactly what buttons to push as they begin to chart a clear course toward their next mammoth event. Considering the results of City Fall, and the potential elements at play, I have to say I’m excited to see how this turns out.

Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow work with Tom Waltz to bring this script to fruition. The author knows exactly how to write this release, as it focuses in on a father and son conversation. He also gives enough room to steadily lay the groundwork for larger troubles down the road, not just with the turtles. My personal favorite bit of dialogue came from the lips of Leonardo, in a very specific sequence that highlighted his more recent history with the Foot Clan. In short: the yarn carries enough weight and substance to be worthy of your time.

The illustrations are mostly crafted by Mateus Santolouco, who once again offers up a display that’s detailed and downright awesome. Every single rendition is chock-full of resonance, as these mean green fighting machines are given new life within the scope of this piece. A handful of pages by Mark Torres and Cory Smith complement the rest of the work as Ronda Pattison crafts a believable color palette. In the end they cement the quality of this endeavor.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #36 is yet another strong outing that proves the vibrancy of this iteration. From beginning to end the entire comic book ebbs and flows with a locked in purpose as it easily comes recommended.
