SUPERMAN: DOOMED #1 Review

Will the Man of Steel take down Doomsday or will the world be Doomed? Read on to find out.

The official description from DC Comics:

Beginning the super-event you have been waiting for in The New 52: Superman vs. Doomsday in a way you’ve never seen before! And with Doomsday’s deadly new abilities, in this battle there can be no winners. The Man of Steel must unleash insane levels of power in order to do the job, only to terrify the world he’s saving. Beating Doomsday is only the beginning of this never ending battle!

Superman Doomed #1 variantSuperman: Doomed has been building up for quite some time now with Superman/Wonder Woman being the main focus for this creature. Finally all the plotting and developing has cultivated in Superman’s deadliest foe coming back like never before.

The script for this one-shot kick off issue is written by all the creative geniuses who work on the series involved with Scott Lobdell, Charles Soule and Greg Pak all working together to set the stage for this event. The opening and the overall explosiveness of Doomsday was simply stunning with Superman’s entrance also being impactful. I also enjoyed how the issue featured aspects from all the series that will be involved in the crossover with the supporting cast of each series also having a part to play. I did however find the story itself to be slightly bland at times and along with the sudden end it let the overall quality down.

Ken Lashley takes on the art duties for this one-shot opener and he does an excellent job. His outstanding layouts along with the awesome look he brings to Doomsday really impressed me as along with the intensity they bring to the issue they also give sheer quality as well. Lashley also does the Man of Steel himself justice with his awe-inspiring presence being felt on each page. The only minor negative point I actually have about the art is the facial expressions as though for the most part they’re terrifically handled they are sometimes a little awkward looking.

Superman: Doomed is a decent start to the crossover with some explosive events. It does however end rather suddenly and fail to give any speculative hint towards the crossovers future. It still however gets a recommendation from me.
