Do we really need to care about this particular era in the storied universe? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Fighting at the side of Darth Vader in an air attack against a group of inspired, cause-driven Separatists, stormtrooper Hock has an opportunity to show his value. When he is captured, learning of the enemy’s cause—and who they’re working with—only reinforces Hock’s belief in the Galactic Empire.

Star Wars-Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows 4_Preview Page 1When it comes to forays into a galaxy far, far away there’s a lot to love in this one, but let’s be frank about who is its true audience. If you’re someone like me, who saw the original Star Wars trilogy and you were enamored with a very specific dark lord, than this is written for you. In short: by all means grab your helmet and mask, do your best impersonation of the iconic breathing and get ready for awesomeness.

Tim Siedell does a marvelous job keeping the focus on our former Clone Trooper. His journey is both personal and believable, as we see an honest perspective in a time where the former Republic was clearly having issues transferring into an Intergalactic Empire. Hats off to the author because through the actions of Hock Malsuum we witness Darth Vader from a different angle than we’re accustomed to. There’s a lot of meaty material that should generate discussion, but with all that said the arc carries a predictable succession of events.

Beyond the text the illustrations handed in by Gabriel Guzman are detailed, as the talent effortlessly translates some iconic shots. The entire body of work impressed me, as this consistent hand realized some renditions that are destined to please. Add in the colors done by Michael Atiyeh and the end result is something that’s going to catch the eye of any comic collector. In short: within the visual component there’s a lot of worth to be found.

Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows #4 is a fun book, that may carry a predictable plot but there are enough worthwhile elements to easily justify a purchase. Recommended.
