Star Wars: Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir #2 Review

Should you even care how this Sith powered skirmish goes? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

With his Shadow Collective army stalled, Darth Maul calls on Mother Talzin for help and is sent reinforcements—the deadly Nightbrothers! Maul is ready again to take on the Separatist droid army, Count Dooku, and General Grievous—in a trio of simultaneous battles!

* Adapted from un-aired episodes of The Clone Wars TV show!

Star Wars-Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir 2_Preview CoverWhen it comes to a galaxy far, far away it can be hard to deliver a story that pleases the discerning fanboys and fangirls that have dedicated their free time to explore its far reaches. Thankfully there are bright spots that beg for extension, least of which is a very popular villain that was seemingly lost following the end Star Wars: Episode I — The Phatom Menace.

Jeremy Barlow hands in a solid script that takes the forces of Death Watch, Black Sun and Dathomir into a direct confrontation with two key Separatist leaders, Count Dooku and General Grievous. It’s an action packed second round that wastes little to no time launching their key members into the fray with a simple to follow plot built chock-full of innate accessibility. It’s always a pleasure to see the criminally underused Darth Maul in the spotlight, but at the same time it’s sad to see him tempered under the weight of yet another controlling force.

My biggest gripe and greatest  complement is that the illustrations handed in by Juan Frigeri differ from the renditions offered in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Each player is given a delicate and consistent level of detail that fits the context of the written word while managing to offer up some striking panels along the way. Add in the colors crafted by Wes Dzioba and the whole of the comic book looks well enough to carry the narrative.

Star Wars: Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir #2 is an exciting romp that’s bound to be memorable despite even the highest expectation. Grab your gear and prepare for another journey with the fate of the galaxy in play! Recommended.
