Star Wars #17 Review

Is the Force strong with this one? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

As Princess Leia and her prince prepare for their wedding day on Arrochar, the uneasy feeling among the Rebels—especially Han Solo—grows. Meanwhile, Luke, on an alpine mission with local troops, discovers the Alliance’s new “friends” aren’t so friendly!

Star Wars 17_Preview CoverWhen it comes to this book each twist and turn always feels a bit held back by the fact that we know where these characters end up at the start of The Empire Strikes Back. Even so the creative team manages to deliver something that’s entertaining from beginning to end. In short: if you’re a fan of the original trilogy I can’t think of a reason for you not to pick this up.

Brian Wood pens the script and the seasoned scribe once again proves his knowledge of these characters. From Luke Skywalker to Han Solo the reactions of these classic heroes feel genuine, even though the path toward this issue’s ultimate cliffhanger came off a tad bit rushed. The main arc seems a bit far fetched, but the idea of Leia Organa agreeing to marriage in order to secure a base for the Rebel Alliance kind of makes sense. But it never rose to the point that the thought of the event occurring felt real enough to cause drama.

The art handed in by Stéphane Créty fit the narrative. Individual players are given time as a clear attention to detail brings them to life, even if their final renditions might seem a bit too off from their movie counterparts. Despite that the background elements, including the ships and building structures, offered a wonderful perspective giving both the Empire and its chief antagonist room to breath. Add in the dynamic colors handed in by Gabe Eltaeb and we’re left with a rock solid comic with complimenting visuals.

Star Wars #17 may not be the best entry of this volume, but it is an engaging adventure that instantly transports me to a time where I held a blaster with a Darth Vader helmet to boot. Recommended.
