The Star Trek event of the year is here but can it live up to such a claim? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

“The Q Gambit” begins here! The crew of the new STAR TREK film franchise encounters the classic Trek villain Q for the first time, only in this all-new 6-part galaxy-spanning adventure developed in associataion with screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci! The mischievous Q sends James T. Kirk on quest that will see the Enterprise joining forces with familiar faces from Star Trek lore, beginning with the crew of a certain space station…

Star Trek #35Star Trek launches it’s event of the year with a six part story called The Q Gambit. So far it lives up to that claim as this issue has been the best I’ve ever read from the ongoing series almost reaching the same uber quality that the films reached. With a character like Q however it was bound to happen as given the mischievous tendencies it won’t be easy for the Enterprise to get rid of him.

Mike Johnson writes his best script to date and given the increase in quality it makes me question why it’s not been their before. Nevertheless given the time travelling and universe jump concept Johnson manages to tie the events of the two Star Trek films into the original universe perfectly with Q’s interaction with Jean-Luc Picard at the start of this issue being very suspenseful. Johnson also manages to kick things up a gear by producing some excitement with one sequence in particular being very exhilarating.

Tony Shasteen does a tremendous job of the artwork on this story with the former Vampire Diaries artist bring a very realistic tone to the story. With character and actor likenesses coming into question that is a helpful trait as it really makes these recognisable faces stand out more. Shasteen also manages to give great depth of field and focus through his layouts and along with the lively facial expressions this helps give a dramatic flair to the visuals. Capping things off Shasteen also produces bold yet striking inks and vivid colours.

Star Trek really ups it’s game with The Q Gambit so far proving to be the Star Trek event of the year. Highly recommended.
