Star Trek #34 Review

How will the Enterprise react when they learn what this strange creature really is? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

“Lost Apollo” concludes here! Stranded on an alien world and cut off from the Enterprise, Spock and Bones must work together to save Captain Kirk from a fate worse than death… a fate tied to the earliest days of humanity’s journey to the stars! Overseen by STAR TREK writer/producer Roberto Orci, this all-new adventure continues the Five Year Mission between the new movies!

Star Trek #34 variantStar Trek‘s latest two part story Lost Apollo comes to it’s conclusion and like the previous two part stories I can’t help but feel there was wasted potential in this story. The story itself sees the Enterprise look into the genetic structure of the strange creature they met with Kirk having a theory as to what he might be.

Mike Johnson brings the Enterprises’ latest exploration to a close, producing some intense and gripping developments along the way. I did however at the same time feel that Johnson didn’t grasp the full potential of this story as an extra issue or two could have really enhanced the overall quality. It’s two issue length also meant that the ending was rather abrupt with the story trying to fit too much information in near the end with it ultimately being rather anticlimactic. On the other hand I do commend Johnson for making the decision to sacrifice action for background as the creatures backstory was much more interesting (all be it predictable).

Joe Corroney once again did a tremendous job of the artwork on this issue with the realistic nature and character accuracy astounding me once more. He also yet again gave us fabulous layouts with the dynamic flow adding a punchy tone to the first half of this story. Added to that he also gave a striking look later on in the issue with the captivating facial expressions having a lot to do with this. Complimenting this was the colours by Sakti Yuwono of Stellar Labs with his pallet working perfectly alongside the tone John Rauch already set.

Star Trek‘s latest tale comes to a slightly disappointing conclusion as though we got some excitement as well as in-depth development the abrupt ending took away all the energy that the story had set-up prior. Still however it did enough to merit a recommendation as most of the story was interesting.
