Shotgun Wedding #2 Review

How were Mike and Chloe involved with one another in the first place and what has Chloe got in store for him in the present? Read on to find out.

The official description from Top Cow:

Mike Stone wants nothing more than to marry the woman of his dreams. Denise is smart, sexy, teaches the second grade, and loves Mike more than anything in the world. What she doesn’t know is that Mike is one of the world’s top assassins and was once engaged to a fellow assassin named Chloe. And when Mike abandoned Chloe on their wedding day, she vowed revenge…

ShotgunWedding02_pg1Shotgun Wedding has given a new meaning to the term with this tale of love and loss giving a very intense vibe that’s perfect for Top Cow. The gritty weekly is already halfway through and though I question why this isn’t a longer series it’s nice to see a writer who knows exactly how many issues he feels he can maintain a great story in.

William Harms shows a great understanding of timing and set-up with the developments of this series so far being very appropriately arranged, and especially in this issue. The way that he juggles the past and present sequences is simply amazing, as whether it’s one or the other he knows exactly how to use the subtext to set-up the transition. On top of this he also gives us a brilliant insight into Mike and Chloe’s past relationship and though this lead to the issue being ever so slightly less exciting as the first it was nice to see how these two have came to the situation they’re in now.

Edward Pun‘s black and white art is a wonderful match to this enigmatic story and though the overall quality and detail isn’t to the same level as the first issue it’s still very eye catching. Pun also yet again uses the space well giving a very dynamic look to the espionage sequences whilst also giving a perilous vibe during the revenge sequences. He also shows a lot of emotion throughout the issue as well with it working in harmony alongside the layout to give a smooth and punchy look to Harms’ great script.

So far Shotgun Wedding has been one of the best mini’s that I’ve read in a long time showing that shorter limited series can be much better than the ambitious ones that the big two produce. Highly recommended.
