Rocket Raccoon #3 Review

Is this an odyssey worth following? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• Everyone’s favorite pistol-packin’ procyon* finally finds himself face-to-face with the intergalactic imposter.

• It’s macho ado about everything as Macho Gomez guest-stars and the Ex-Terminators are hot on Rocket’s tail!

*Procyon is the scientific term for raccoon, obviously.

Rocket Raccoon 3_Variant CoverI’m going to freely admit that the first time I dipped my toes into the intergalactic waters of the cosmic line the whole concept of it caught my attention. And then Annihilation happened and it introduced to a few noteworthy heroes and villians that instantly sparked my interest, needless to say this fur-ball was among them. And I’m ecstatic to see him in his own monthly title where three issues in it’s still offering something rather entertaining.

Skottie Young pens the script and the talent does a wonderful job putting Rocket Raccoon in a fun but dangerous situation. He keeps the character true to form as he, and Groot, go about their business trying to sort out this frame-up. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when this title launched but through the works of the author we’re given a slightly nonsensical but somehow relevant ride that’s bound and determined to please both fanboys and fangirls. In short: this is just a fun excuse for more rollicking adventures with recognizable members of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The illustrations, for me, are the real star of this comic book. Skottie Young from the first page to the final panel effortlessly builds a visceral world full of detail and character that feels wholly unique. And that right there helps each sequence stand out all the way to the cliffhanger finish. Add in the colors by Jean-Francois Beaulieu and the look is absolutely cemented, as it ebbs and flows with the right personality for its primaries.

Rocket Raccoon #3 is an extravaganza that never really features any depth, which in all honestly could be labeled as its only problem. Even so the quality work on display and the spunky attitude help this release get a recommendation from me.
