Robotech/Voltron #5 Review

Does this oddly compelling crossover end well? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

FINAL ISSUE!!! The Drule witch Haggar uses her black magic to exploit a critical vulnerability of Robotechnology and the SDF-1 itself. The clock is also ticking as the celestial window to return home is about to close for the displaced crew of the the Super Dimension Fortress and the Lion Force. The only hope to save their universes from the rip in the time-space continuum may lie with the return of Rick Hunter and a long-lost piece of Voltron. This astounding conclusion to the epic mecha crossover is not to be missed!

Layout 1Maybe it’s the kid in me that loved playing with robot toys, but any title that seeks to mash-up different properties that exist within that genre instantly has my attention. And as this conclusion takes its last strides of a narrative that seemed almost unbelievable the creative team more or less succeeds in rewarding their audience.

Bill Spangler and Tommy Yune work together to craft a script that certainly knows how and when to pull the nostalgia card on both Robotech and Voltron fans. For the most part the text survives on some very stuffy but nonetheless worthwhile dialogue that will transport eager readers to a simpler time, courtesy of a couple television properties that are now in another medium. There was a subplot involving Allura that was no less than an unnecessary eleventh hour curve-ball but it all turned out fine.

Even so the visuals handed in by Elmer Damaso and the Digital Art Chefs Team remained as a consistent and wholly inviting component. Each page existed in a way that emulated the old shows but updated them ever so slightly. Thereby complimenting some of their familiar attributes and so in other words: the comic is gifted with an array of pictures that suit the text and support this release.

Robotech/Voltron #5 is an imperfect but wholly engaging yarn that’s bound to excite fans of both sagas. The ending came off a bit rushed but it still managed to come recommended.
