Powerpuff Girls #7 Review

Are the epic adventures of these precious little girls worth following? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

Watch out, Townsville! There ain’t no party like a MONSTER ISLAND party, and these beasties are holding their festivities in YOUR FAIR CITY! Will the Powerpuff Girls be able to stop them before they COMPLETELY trash the place?! Part one of a special 2-issue story by Derek Charm!

Powerpuff Girls 7_Preview Page 1It’s a surprisingly potent release, that sees our colorful heroines forced to face their own limitations. The creative team masterfully plays with familiar tropes while keeping the current ongoing narrative fresh in our minds. The end result is a worthwhile comic book that may not break the mold but it certainly offers up some interesting surface cracks.

The script by Derek Charm is a simple read that only suffers from the momentary, but intentional, bout of unnecessary exposition. It’s through that lens that we see these little girls in a whole new light, and in the wake of their victory over Mojo Jojo things go from good to bad rather quickly. As the population of Monster Island invades Townsville for a day, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup enter what can only be described as a brutal gauntlet. The most powerful thing featured here is the ending, even if frequent followers know that it’s just not a resolution that can last.

The art found within this comic book matches the tempo of the script, as it strives to render a similar experience to the aged television property. Like Troy Little our intrepid author Derek Charm pulls double duty and the results are more than passable. I admit that there were some panels that looked just a wee bit off from what fans have come to expect, but these were few and far between. The summation of the romp carries a solid display that does all it needs to in order to properly cement authenticity.

Powerpuff Girls #7 arrives and packs a strong narrative punch, so much so that it’ll easily get people to come back and see if the day truly was saved. Recommended.
