ONE-HIT WONDER #1 Review

Do we really need a tale revolving around  a has been turned assassin? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

If there was a thin line between reality and fiction, Richie Reese tore it down. Better, he crushed it. Smashed it. Destroyed it. From child star to hitman in Hollywood, this is the story of a glorious bastard.

Written by FABRICE SAPOLSKY (Spider-Man Noir) and drawn by superstar artist ARIEL OLIVETTI (Cable, Punisher War Journal, Conan), this is the crime comedy series you don’t want to miss this year.

One-Hit Wonder 1_Preview Page 1There’s a lot to love within the confines of this quirky and just beginning odyssey. Thanks to an over the top protagonist, with a striking sense of self-worth, and a more than decent target there’s certainly room for exploration. Add in the superb creative team and you have something that’s interesting enough to earn a spot your pull-list.

Fabrice Sapolsky handles the script and the scribe offers up a very witty take on a rather dark premise. He attacks the idea of the former child star turned adult and their spiral down as they attempt to claim the fame that was once their own. It’s an interesting dynamic that acts as the premise but eventually gives way to an oddly entertaining dark comedy. I enjoyed the literary progression immensely but there were moments where I was left scratching my head as some of the motivations seemed a bit shaky for the secondary players.

The art by Ariel Olivetti instantly gives the world of Richie Reese a classic feel. The endlessly gifted talent yields painted visuals that carry an abundance of detail in order to properly convey the inner-workings of the text. He nails each moment but there are some odd choices that make this feel more like a piece lost in time while the words seem to support a more modern Hollywood jaunt.

One-Hit Wonder #1 is an entertaining start to what could be a compelling series. Not sure if the second issue will be up to par with this but as of right now this title comes recommended.
