New Warriors #3 Review

Does a world full of Avengers really need the New Warriors? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

THE KIDS ARE ALL FIGHT!

• The all-new NOVA has tea with the High Evolutionary as a world-wide genocide approaches.

• Why does the High Evolutionary want to kill anything that’s not human? Is he a hero or villain? The answers are here!

• PLUS! As the New Warriors gather in New York, a captured SCARLET SPIDER meets Nova, and one of them REALLY annoys the other. Guess.

New Warriors 3_Variant CoverFor a title that came off the presses as yet another team book it’s turned out to be a rather refreshing take on the genre. In a sea of comics that jam-pack varying superheroes in order to garner the attention of eager followers it’s nice to see a creative team that’s ready and willing to spin a yarn that makes the crossover necessary and sensible. In short: you’ll believe in the intersection of Scarlet Spider and Nova.

What really sells this is the rock solid script handed in by Christopher Yost. His piece from the first page to final panel ebbs and flows with the right amount of personality in order to sell the players involved. The reason behind the formation of this latest squad is interesting and bigger than I honestly expected but buried beneath that layer is a sharp wit and consistent comedic timing that easily justify the more outlandish moments found in this release.

The illustrations are detailed enough to sell the various aspects of this romp. And Marcus To does a great job capturing the personalities at play without hindering them in a uniform design that cheapens their own origins. The colors done by David Curiel further cement the high quality visual component as a dazzling array of renditions carry this feature to a worthwhile cliffhanger.

New Warriors #3 exists in a world where there are all kinds of genetic anomalies and imperfections. And born from that fact is this team, and trust me, as this point they’re turning into something that’s more than worth rooting for. Recommended.
