Morning Glories 39_Preview PageI don’t even know how you broach the subject at the center of this issue. We have so much material at play that it becomes more apparent with each outing that this comic book exists on a whole other level than your standard monthly affair. That’s not to discredit any other compelling works out there but this particular franchise always leaves me in a thinking position. But I never feel all the way lost and that is the might of its creative team as they continue to spin a yarn featuring the troubled students seemingly trapped at the Morning Glories Academy.

Nick Spencer pens the script and the author begins the festivities with a rather uneasy announcement over the school’s PA system. Lots of words are carefully chosen to highlight recent events therein while we get a quick look at quite a few familiar faces. Then the story really gets going as we see a very distinct conversation occurring between Ms. Hodge and Casey regarding her place in the student body and forthcoming future. It’s a rather brisk read that goes a long way in establishing even more nuance to these festivities but its the element of Ms. Clarkson that really cements the angst of this temporal play.

Now we come to the illustrations done by Joe Eisma. The talent from the first page to the final panel demonstrates his level of skill by crafting renditions with minimal line-work and enough pencil strokes to fully realize what the script demands. I was particular impressed with the emotions present on each face, which in turn showed how far his skills have come. Add in the colors by Paul Little and I have very little to complain about. In short: this is a strong visual component.

Morning Glories #39 once again proves why month-in and month-out that this comic book deserves a spot on your pull-list. Thanks to the quality work and sturdy creative team this comes highly recommended.
