Magnus: Robot Fighter #3 Review

Will Magnus escape Leeja Clane the Human Hunter? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

How do you kill a robot fighter? Send a human. LEEJA CLANE: HUMAN HUNTER! Her guns are huge! Her car is fast! Her theme music is awesome! How’s Magnus possibly going to survive against an opponent with no robot parts? It’s flesh-and-blood brawling brought by FRED VAN LENTE (Conan The Barbarian) and CORY SMITH (Fathom)!

Magnus #3 variantMagnus: Robot Fighter has been a fabulous series so far being exciting and clever at every turn. This issue takes an unique path compared to the previous two as despite having a lot of similarities the overall tone and pace is very different. Overall this change in tone is brilliant as though at times slightly cheesy it gives a different viewpoint to the series.

Fred Van Lente does an excellent job of fleshing out this origin arc with the drama, excitement and suspense being through the roof. He also does a fantastic job with character development as the contrasting personalities of Magnus and Leeja allows for brilliant contrast. I also love how Van Lente doesn’t definitively show Leeja or the Robot Government as the bad guys as though Magnus may be our hero there seems to be some form of good in his adversaries.

Cory Smith‘s art is simply marvellous with his style giving a wonderful look and feel to the series. His layouts in particular are phenomenal with the energetic flow being visually stunning. Smith also does a setting tone and mood with the character positioning and facial expressions adding a lot to the overall atmosphere of the story. Add to this the explosive action and intense colours from Mauricio Wallace and you have artwork which is just as good as the script.

Magnus: Robot Fighter continues to amaze with it’s exciting and energetic being very thrilling to read. Highly recommended.
