Magnus Robot Fighter #2 variantDynamite’s Golden Key revival has been an amazing as though the characters time under the Dark Horse gave entertaining stories so far Dynamite have given a much more modern and sleek look to the universe. Over it’s first two issues Magnus has shown itself to be a sophisticated series with an exciting story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Fred Van Lente moves forward from the first issue brilliantly as having introduced the characters and twisted Magnus’ life from joyful to nightmarish he gets down to the bare bones of the story delving deeper into the overall mystery. It is however the overall characteristics as well as the dialogue that captures my attention the most and the way he uses “beep” to get round robots swearing was pure genius. On top of all this Van Lente also introduces a nemesis for Magnus giving us a suspenseful cliffhanger to this marvellous second outing.

Cory Smith really impressed me with his art in the first issue and it’s no different here. The dynamic and impactful layout of his artwork gives a powerful feel to the story as even during the quieter, more dialogue focused sequences it proves to be eye catching. Smith also yet again gives us some top class action with Magnus eventually getting to rip loose in a big way with the moniker Robot Fighter proving extremely fitting (as it should be). Alongside all this we also get deep punchy colours from Mauricio Wallace which both add vibe to the action as well as give a sleek look to the city as a whole.

Magnus: Robot Fighter is most certainly a must have series and so far the Golden Key Universe is definitely getting a big thumbs up from me. Highly recommended.
