My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #24 Review

Are you ready for an MLP one-shot story featuring Fluttershy, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, and…Discord?! Time travel is abound in this fun issue.

Here’s the official description from IDW:

Discord knows Fluttershy loves animals, so decides to take her and the Cutie Mark Crusaders on a trip through time so they can see some of the amazing animals of Equestria’s past! Unfortunately, some of them aren’t so friendly. And Discord CAN remember how to get back home… right?

Whenever Discord is announced to be in a story, people get extra excited. Even as a good guy he never ceases to be entertaining. This one has him randomly (nothing new for the Lord of Chaos) pop up to bring Fluttershy and the Cutie Mark Crusaders on a time traveling adventure. The story is a standalone, so if you haven’t been reading MLP(!) you can’t go wrong with this one.

Jeremy Whitley brings us another tale starring Discord and the Cutie Mark Crusaders. (Check out Friends Forever #2, which came out way back in February for his first story with the characters!) This time Fluttershy is thrown into the mix. Each of the characters gets to shine, but the real draw of the issue is the time traveling. Discord has them travel to the ancient past, the future, and cool places in-between. (Ever want to see the MLP version of Atlantis?) The overall writing of the characters is solid, and some of the creatures that appear during the time traveling are very unique. There is one line Fluttershy spoke that even in context of what was happening seemed out of character, when she told Discord, “Well maybe you shouldn’t have any friends.” I don’t think she would say that in any circumstance.

Brenda Hickey’s art is solid throughout. Upon looking back I noticed she likes to use very simplistic backgrounds; often in panels the background is just one color. This is not a bad thing, it works for this particular type of story. The main cover by Brenda is a fantastic representation of what’s in the story and stands out on the shelf. Amy Mebberson does cover B, and as with almost all of her work it’s very good. (Fluttershy is drawn to perfection.) The RI by Jennifer Meyers is a nice piece. While less detailed than the other two, Fluttershy fans will definitely want to pick it up.

Overall, an exciting issue of MLP. Discord will never stop being a highlight. The Cutie Mark Crusaders were a lot of fun too, and Fluttershy while technically not doing much contributes some nice dialogue. (Aside from of course that one line.) The time traveling aspect sells the issue, I’m surprised the show hasn’t explored that concept. The MLP comics continue to be strong!
