My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #22 Review

The mystery solved! Is the conclusion to this Manehattan adventure satisfying? Ponies + crime-solving = win!

Here’s the official description from IDW:

Has Trixie been framed for stealing a diamond, or is she up to her old tricks? It’s a classic whodunit set in the hustle and bustle of Manehattan! Don’t miss the conclusion to this madcap caper!

This two-part story has been a pretty unique and engaging read. So far the only episode to truly visit Equestria’s version of the Big Apple is ‘Rarity Takes Manehattan.’ While the setting is a fun backdrop, the main treat is watching Trixie work alongside some of the ponies. The previous issue set up the mystery nicely, how is the conclusion? It’s a lot of fun since it’s basically what you get when you combine ponies with Scooby-Doo.

Ted Anderson continues the story with classic mystery-solving. It’s fun seeing how distinctive the ponies are when it comes to things like this. We have Fluttershy who takes discreet to the extreme and on the other side we have Applejack who gets right down to business. As you can tell the writing is pretty much perfect. While the majority of the issue focuses on the ponies trying to catch Rough Diamond, it does feature some really good emotion. Fans will greatly appreciate the conversation between Babs and Trixie. The conclusion to the mystery at first felt disappointing, but in retrospect after thinking about it it’s not that bad of an outcome.

Agnes Garbowska’s art continues to be solid. The ponies are adorable; the art invokes that greatly, and it really made the Babs/Trixie conversation more emotional. The main cover by Garbowska is a pretty fun piece, portraying the cast in Days of Future Past-like poses. Cover B by Zander Cannon is definitely great, though lacking Rarity. The RI by Alison Blackwell doesn’t have anything to do with the story, but Pinkie Pie fans will get a kick out of it.

Overall, My Little Pony’s latest adventure ends with a satisfying conclusion. All the characters have great lines and it’s just a really fun story. Hopefully Trixie and Babs will be back soon!
