Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure #5 Review

Is this a comic book that deserves to be welcomed or shunned? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Magna finally makes it to Landing, the proverbial city of tomorrow founded and governed by none other than Flash Gordon. There, she finds herself assisting Flash in his experiments and research; as he hopes to one day make it back to the stars. But there are strange and improbable side-effects to his projects occurring not too far off on the mysterious Island ruled by the a man called Moreau…

Legenderry-A Steampunk Adventure 5_Variant CoverThere’s no doubt in my mind that this oddly compelling franchise is a contender for one of my favorite independent properties. By taking various icons and mixing them together in a steampunk atmosphere this creative team has crafted something that’s downright memorable. Does it carry some flaws? Absolutely. Are any of them fatal? Certainly not.

I will freely admit that the previous scripts by Bill Willingham danced between over explanation and solid exposition. That remains true in this latest piece, as the author once again gives us an entry that focuses in on our primary heroine and her problems. With all the layers there’s clear talent behind this that carries a remarkably firm grasp on classic literary roles. Even so I found some of the dialogue, especially from Silver Star, to be overly corny but when the action kicks in he proves his worth from Flash Gordon to Red Sonja.

The illustrations handed in by Sergio Fernandez Davila continue to be immensely detailed. The visual architect is asked to not only channel the essence of established legends but also re-imagine them in a way that hasn’t been seen before. And for the most part the pencils do their work, except for a few instances where I felt that the final renditions clashed with their intended interpretation. But with the dynamic colors by Wes Hartman added to the mix the final products flows fine.

Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure #5 carries a sturdy mechanical exterior with just enough nods to each franchise to make even the most discerning fan very happy. Recommended.
