King Conan: The Conqueror #4 Review

Will there ever be an adaption of this property that speaks beyond its own genre fanbase? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Conan’s quest for the mystical jewel that could restore him to the throne of Aquilonia leads him into a pitch-black, demon-filled maze in Stygia! Facing the fanatical priests of Set will be hard enough, but can the hot-blooded barbarian resist Akivasha, a tempting seductress with . . . strange appetites?

King Conan-The Conqueror 4_Preview PageBy Crom this is one jaunt that we can all be proud of, especially as the creative team continues to offer a level of quality few yarns have honestly ever known. Trust me when I say that if you’re a fan of this particular King and his storied legacy than this is one volume and release that you can’t afford to miss. In short: add this comic to your buy pile because you deserve it.

First and foremost my compliments to Timothy Truman, who without a doubt delivers yet another compelling and worthwhile script in this odyssey featuring our displaced ruler. Conan the Barbarian has been through a lot in his life, and perhaps this test is his greatest challenge yet, with that in mind the author captures his own emotions through the his future self. That does defeat the terror of the moment, where audience members might question whether our hero lives or dies but it doesn’t hinder the ultimate cliffhanger.

Tomás Giorello does an absolutely amazing job with the illustrations in this issue. His soft, well formed and detailed style perfectly suits the momentum of the narrative without ever hindering its forward progression. When combined with the colors by José Villarrubia the entire piece finds its visual footing and trust me most comics at your local shop can only wish that they looked this good. To sum up: if the story itself is not enough of a reason buy this for the very pretty pictures.

King Conan: The Conqueror #4 is one of only a handful of remaining issues in this rather lengthy adaptation. And even in its near finality it easily comes highly recommended.
