Jennifer Blood: Born Again #2 Review

Is there life left in the franchise? Or is this a sequel that needs to be put down? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Steven Grant, the well-known writer of classic The Punisher stories as well as the creator and writer of Boom!’s 2 Guns continues his bold new direction for Jennifer Blood. It’s Blood in the streets, as the false Jennifer Blood lays waste to the mobs of Los Angeles, unaware she’s on a collision course with the real one, fresh out of retirement and polishing her violent skills while racing westward down America’s highways.

Layout 1What makes this property stand out is the fact that it finds a simple route to bring back the famed vigilante. In her first volume our protagonist really took it to the criminal element, but she got sloppy and the results from that were the complete and utter loss of her family. And now someone is impersonating her? Good luck to whoever was stupid enough to do that.

Steven Grant pens the script and he does a fine job realizing the inner dialogue and spunky nature of Jennifer Blood. And at this stage that really is key to all of this, as the entire piece relies on her in order for the festivities to function properly. The additional enemies, they don’t matter, unless of course if Jessica Blute is primed for the mission at hand. Through smart dialogue and a succession of events, our brutal player indeed stays on target.

The illustrations handed in by Kewber Baal successfully support the text from beginning to end. But there were a few instances that lacked an air of consistency, as facial and bodily details shifted from page to page. Even so the colors handed in by Inlight Studios do more than enough to offer a dynamic and vibrant layer that fits the legacy of this renegade with a cause.

Jennifer Blood: Born Again #2 is a good continuation with solid chops to prove it. There are some issues within the confines of this outing, but these were not enough to derail the experience. Recommended.
