JENNIFER BLOOD: BORN AGAIN #1 Review

Should fans rush to their local shops or avoid this latest extension of a fondly remembered but rather violent title? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

The streets of Lalaland run red when Jennifer Blood returns to declare a new war on the mobs. Or does she? As a low level hood plots to leverage her in a bid to take over the Los Angeles underworld, her war attracts some very dangerous attention and unexpectedly sets a lethal international chain of events in motion. A deadly new direction from writer Steven Grant, the well-known writer of classic The Punisher stories as well as the creator and writer of Boom!’s 2 Guns!

Jennifer Blood-Born Again 1_Preview PageI think it’s true that we never know how much we miss something until it’s gone and that’s the case for this franchise. Thankfully we have a competent creative team with a decent set-up and some worthwhile narrative elements to get this ball rolling once again. So one might say: that this little hiatus from comic stands is exactly what this property needed.

Steven Grant writes the script that tells us all about the re-emergence of Jennifer Blood, and the author does so with the same spunk that this vigilante was known for. To be honest he’s been given a task with a tall order, namely one that requires a story that not only brings back a well-defined character but gives her something new to fight for. This one is not about her family but reputation, and based on her own introspection, it carries more than enough weight to make the ultimate sequence of events worthwhile enough to justify this return.

Seeing the illustrations handed in by Kewber Baal gives this release a feeling that flows like a homecoming celebration. Each panel is detailed enough with pencil strokes that easily evoke the right candor to allow this tale that invites chaos, violence and depravity to reach a level of believable circumstance. And when the colors by InLight Studios get added to the mix, this outing gets the right vision to become something more. In other words: the visual side of this series is exactly the caliber it needs to be.

Jennifer Blood: Born Again #1 is a sterling example of a franchise continuation. It doesn’t feel like a cheap excuse to milk fans as this creative team earns attention with a comic book that comes highly recommended.
