Wildfire #3 Review

How will Dan and the military handle the ACR outbreak now that it’s reached catastrophic proportions? Read on to find out.

The official description from Top Cow:

In the aftermath of the fire that swept through West Los Angeles, other plants are now growing wildly out of control and no one seems to know why or how to stop it. The city has been quarantined and the military is considering. Can Dan and Violet stop the disaster before the military takes more drastic measures for containment?

Wildfire #3 variantFollowing the devastating climax to the last issue, Wildfire and more importantly main character Dan Miller is tasked with trying to find a speedy resolution to what can only be described as a nightmarish situation. Whilst all this is happening we also see how Dan’s sister Ashley, and fellow scientist Violet handle the derelict landscape that LA has turned into.

Matt Hawkins hasn’t half written a gripping tale, as despite slowing things down ever so slightly to tackle the ramifications of recent events, the series as a whole remains as thrilling as ever. Taking a more refined approach, Hawkins delves deep into the characters psyche, as whether it’s Dan ripping his brain apart to find answers to this problem, or news reporter Michelle Crawford’s frustration over newbie Sheila Todd taking over the spotlight it’s obvious that this state of affair has affected everyone.

Linda Sejic has been the talent behind the wonderful artwork we’ve seen over the course of this series, with her painted visuals continuing to captivate here. Having a dramatic vibe throughout, Sejic manages to give an intensely gripping atmosphere, with her layouts being fabulous. I even found the more erratic parts of her layout to be more appealing, as having found it jarring in the past, it was nice to see it used in a more fitting manor. Sejic also produces amazing landscapes, with the destruction throughout LA being both evident, and spectacular.

Wildfire continues to entice, as despite slowing down slightly, the character depth and seriousness of the situation makes it a thrilling read. Highly recommended.
