Unity #11 Review

Does this set up the finale of Armor Wars nicely or not? Read on to find out.

The official description from Valiant:

Last hope. Last stand.

In the wake of Livewire’s stunning sacrifice, how will X-O Manowar, Ninjak, and the Eternal Warrior comes to terms? With a punishing revenge mission led by Bloodshot, that’s how! If it bleeds, they can kill it…and the leaner, meaner Unity team just became a living, breathing box of armor-piercing rounds. The Armor Hunters put Earth in their bullseye… Now, the bullseye bites back!

UNITY_011_VARIANT_CAFUThe conclusion of Armor Hunters is almost upon us, but prior to that we are given the last chapter in the Unity tie-in. Unity continue to fight on two fronts, as Livewire tries to take control of the Hunter drones whilst Ninjak tries to think of a solution from his past. All this continues to prove why Armor Hunters is the must read event of the year, with Valiant teaching the big two a much needed lesson on how to do event tie-ins.

Matt Kindt continues to write Unity, with the Mind MGMT creator once again producing a fantastic script. Though the issue lacks in intensity when compared to recent issues, the character focus and determination adds a lot of depth to the issue, with the emotion being both subtle and powerful. Unity #11 will however continue to upset fans who aren’t reading Armor Hunters, as though we’re given a slightly detached tale, it is very much focused on the Armor Hunters event.

Stephen Segovia has really impressed me with his artwork over the course of this Armor Hunters arc. Complimenting the script brilliantly, the lively layouts really allow the story to move, with the close-ups in particular adding tension. Segovia is also joined by guest artists: Pere Perez, Brian Hurtt, Brian Level, Raul Allen, Joe Eisma, Ryan Lee during the flashback sequences, with each artist doing a brilliant job of setting the tempo of each sequence. Rounding off this vast art team we have colourist Allen Passalaqua, with his mixture of bold and soft colours setting brilliant tone throughout.

Unity #11 does a brilliant job of setting up Armor Hunters #4, proving why this is a must read event. Highly recommended.
