The official description from Valiant:

Before X-O Manowar… Before Ninjak… The world was changed in the trenches…

The unbreakable all-star superteam known as UNITY has saved the planet, and the world is in its debt…but is this the first time a band of exceptional heroes and soldiers has rescued humanity from a doomsday threat? The Eternal Warrior remembers, and, one hundred years ago, behind a curtain of barbed wire and corpses, he led another team of valiant champions on a life-or-death mission that changed the very course of history. Now, for the first time, find out why the world needs UNITY…and why there has always been one to stand against the threats no ordinary team could match!

UNITY_ZERO_VARIANT_CHRISCROSSUnity #0 gives us a look into Eternal Warrior’s past, and how he lead Unit Y (get it.. Unity) during World War I. Though the general tone and atmosphere felt majorly different from the norm, it was nice to see a different era of Eternal Warrior, showing how his immortal life has taken it’s toll. The characters that build-up Unit Y also prove extremely interesting, as though I still prefer the regular Unity team, considering the setting, they worked very well.

Matt Kindt has been doing an awesome job over the course of Unity, and though this one-shot tale may feel a little too different from his prior work, it does have some interesting moments. Right from the start Kindt manages to give a dramatic flair to this WW1 set tale, with the difference personalities within Unit Y allowing for some diverseness. Despite this it is the overall depth of Eternal Warrior that enthralled me the most, with the narration only helping to enhance the quality of this.

Cary Nord may be working on Eternal Warrior come next months Eternal Warrior: Days Of Steel, but prior to that we get to see how he handles the immortal character in this WW1 tale. Delivering a very tonal and textured finish, Nord manages to produces some striking visuals, wit his layouts also giving a mixture of drama and excitement. His inks also allow for a very sleek finish, and along with Jose Villarrubia‘s soft, toned colours it makes this story all the more enthralling.

Unity #0 may not be the usual sort of tale to expect from this series, but given the fact Eternal Warrior will return to his own solo series come next month, it’s fitting to see yet another era in his immortal life. The issue also gives a different take on teamwork, with Unit Y being nothing like Unity. Recommended.
