The official description from Image:

Chenglei is starting to find himself in Shu, the Chinese city built under a Tree: but things are starting to find him, too. There’s a storm coming, and the pressure is starting to be felt all over the world.

Trees #4 previewTrees has been a series that somehow has kept my interest. Despite being less than stellar, the series has consistently given little pieces of intriguing development. This issue however has completely baffled me. Having next to no proper development, the issue sees two sets of characters go about their day, and though the interactions weren’t boring, the overall experience was very underwhelming.

Warren Ellis really has me perplexed as to where he’s taking this series, as despite giving some promising development in the last issue, he returns to this lackluster performance. With only the final few pages being of real interest, this issue had very little to be excited about. Ellis did however give some shocking character development, but the suddenness, and almost inappropriate timing of this made it feel less important than it should have been.

One saving grace in this issue is the artwork of Jason Howard, who as ever gives sensational visuals. The rough, gritty tone of his pencils really helps to bring out the desolate tone of this world, giving a grim, yet realistic look. He also manages to add a little bit of drama through his wonderful facial expressions, with it helping to give some energy to this lifeless tale. Howards also manages to give fabulous finishing touches to his art, with striking inks, and vivid colours.

Trees latest instalment proves very underwhelming, as though the concept still intrigues me, I can’t recommend this issue.
