Terminal Hero #3 Review

Will Terminal Hero continue to improve over the poor first issue? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Now in the United States, the nightmares keep coming for one-time terminal case Rory Fletcher. In desperation, he leaves Rory Fletcher behind and assumes a new identity, which comes with a ready-made beautiful wife and cute kids. All seems well until visitors from his past life – and a horrific reminder of his cancer – threaten to destroy this newfound happiness. Meanwhile back in England, nervous Minesh and beautiful damaged Mia get dangerously mixed up with the strange Treatment Q.

TermHero03-4-cf152After a rather poor first outing Terminal Hero has certainly upped seriously upped its game over the last couple of issues, showing some real potential. Following last issues explosive ending, Rory Fletcher successful makes a new life for himself, using his unique powers to literally take the identity of the deceased Chris Walker. Life isn’t however simple for “Chris”, with these inner demons proving to be the real intriguing factor of this chapter.

Peter Milligan does a great job of moving this tale forward, giving some interesting developments. The way that he allows Rory to believe in the world that Chris has build for himself really adds a layer of self content, with his inner demons being exactly what this self obsessed character deserves. In addition to this Milligan also teases that British Intelligence may not be as obvious as Rory hoped, and if handled right this is potentially a good way to take the series. Despite this there wasn’t one moment that wowed me, with it being good, but not amazing.

Piotr Kowalski has finally won me over. It may have taken three issues, and though there hasn’t been a considerable change in the quality, I’m starting to warm up to his style. Delivering some dynamic layouts Kowalski manages to give a dramatic flow that compliments the narration of this tale brilliantly. What really impressed me about Kowalski’s art is the design of Cancer Kid, with the grotesque tumours having an almost wickedly gory vibe to it. Kelly Fitzpatrick‘s colours also continue to amaze, with her soft, yet vivid colours giving a wonderful overtone.

Terminal Hero has certainly upped its game over these last couple of issues, with Rory’s new life as Chris Walker being very intriguing. The wicked twist to this new life is where the tale really shows it’s worth, with the future prospect of this tale showing a lot of promise. Recommended.
