The Massive #28 Review

How will the crew handle Cal’s deteriorating health? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

As a storm rages around the crew of the Kapital they embrace the reappearance of The Massive, and learn much more about the origin of the Crash from Mary. But it’s only when masses of earth rise from the ocean floor that things really get interesting. . .

The Massive #28 previewHaving hopped aboard The Massive after six arcs, and eighteen issues I have to say I was initially confused. Having read the series since I have to say it’s been well worth this initial state of confusion, as though I still feel like I’m missing a piece of the bigger picture, the series has been constantly leaving me hooked for more, with Mary’s revelation to Cal being particularly gripping.

Brian Wood has created a magnificent world in The Massive, as though there are so many questions I have about the Crash, and the Massive itself, he manages to make these more mysterious that annoying. Again these questions could easily be due to having missed the first eighteen issues, but nonetheless it’s a part of the series that keeps me hooked. As for this issue, Wood gives some great development involving Mary and Mag, ending the issue in a very curious way.

Garry Brown may have become the new artist on Catwoman, but his art on The Massive still rocks. Giving some gritty lines, the rough style of Brown really helps give this post-“Crash” the desolate look that it needs. Brown also manages to give some brilliant character expressions, and along with the dramatic layouts it gives a lot of depth to the events at hand, allowing the emotions to flow freely. The colours of Jordie Bellaire also are as wonderful as ever, with the bold, light colours giving a very striking finish to Brown’s art.

The Massive continues to be a thrilling read, with the character depth, and mysterious adventure being as gripping as ever. The deteriorating health of Cal also gives some cause for thought, with the way his best friend Mag, and lover Mary view the situation being very dramatic. Highly recommended.
