Magnus: Robot Fighter #6 Review

How will Magnus go about rescuing Leahm? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Welcome to THE UNCANNY VALLEY, an incredibly illegal Sex & Death club, where humans fight one another in a pit and whoever loses has their dead body parts taken by Tranmechs to add to their own robo-bodies. It’s gross so Magnus has to try really really really really REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hard not to lose. Mechanized mayhem from FRED VAN LENTE (Conan The Avenger) and CORY SMITH (Fathom)!

Magnus06CovSubscriptSmithMagnus: Robot Fighter is a Dynamite series that I can’t get enough off, and though we’ve had to wait that little bit longer for this issue, it still proves to be as enticing as ever. Moving swiftly on from the last issue, we see what the Harvesters have done with the captured Leahm, and how Magnus plans on saving him.

Fred Van Lente continues to do a wonderful job of scripting this series, as though this issue didn’t captivate me quite as much as recent entries, the overall story remains intriguing. The way in which he opens this issue, drawing the attention away from Magnus really appealed to me, as bar easing new readers into the story, it gave a wider insight into the Harvesters. Van Lente also gave wonderful dialogue, with the interaction between Magnus and Moira being very gripping. Despite this I did feel things moved too fast, with some of the action feeling unnecessary.

The artwork on this issue is handled by series regular Cory Smith, who’s joined by Joseph Cooper and Roberto Castro. Despite the transition between the three artists being a little jarring, the overall finish was very appealing, with the energy remaining throughout. Due to the difference in styles, the thing that stood out most was the scenery, with the detailed surrounding, and the bold inkwork standing out. Joining this we also get very soft, vivid colours from Mauricio Wallace, with his palette complimenting the trio of artists.

Magnus: Robot Fighter may not have been as exciting as usual, but the story progression and character interaction made it a worthwhile read. Recommended.
