Lazarus #12 Review

Will Conclave continue to hit all the right notes? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

“CONCLAVE,” Part Two The rulers of the world have gathered in high-security luxury, and now every Family is vying for advantage. Joacquim Morray makes his intentions known to Forever, and Jakob Hock advances his plan to destroy the Carlyle Family once and for all.

Lazarus #12Conclave might only be into it’s second issue, but already it has firmly grasped my attention. Lazarus has already proven itself to be one of the best independent series out there, and though this story still has a little bit to go before topping the opening arc, the vastness of it’s scope certainly shows the potential of doing so.

Greg Rucka has done a fabulous job of building the world of Lazarus, with Conclave just allowing him to do so much more. What I loved most about his writing in this issue is how he allows Forever to be normal for a change, and that despite being fearless in any kind of fight, that such a simple thing like a formal party has her nervous. I’m also enjoying how Rucka’s adding in yet more Lazari, and I’m sure before the end of this arc he’ll utilise them to their full potential.

Michael Lark‘s art is something that I just can’t get enough, to the point that should the writing go downhill that I’d probably still buy this series. But luckily that isn’t the case. I do however have to say that I’m a little disappointed with his cover, though that’s most likely down to the colours, which makes it look like something from a 90’s Tomb Raider game. The interiors on the other hand are as awesome as ever, with the wonderful scenery, and fluid layout being simply mesmerizing. The interior colours of Santi Arcas are also as ever enthralling, helping give a sleek finish.

Lazarus continues to prove why it’s one of the best independent comics out, with Conclave having the potential to take the series to a whole ‘nother level. It’s also doing a fabulous job of introducing more Lazari, teasing something very exciting. Highly recommended.
