The Devilers #4 Review

What member of The Devilers will we get a backstory of this time? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

A Deviler DIES RIGHT HERE! As the true villain is revealed, and, the supposed King of Hell is deposed, the Devilers face their worst nightmare, a world too far gone to be saved.

Layout 1As the series has progressed we’ve been given a glimpse into the background of each member of this motley crew of exorcists, with each one being thoroughly unique. This time round it’s Samir who gets put under the spotlight, and though this may not have been the most compelling, the revelations near the end most definitely was the most surprising.

Joshua Hale Fialkov has been twisting a rather intriguing tale into Hell, as though the quality hasn’t been as high as I hoped, it hasn’t been too far behind. In this issue Fialkov gives some gripping developments, with the interaction between the group and God being very entertaining. I especially enjoyed the reaction that George, the atheist had, with the overall atmosphere being very enthralling. Despite this the issue as a whole isn’t the best, as bar the interaction and final twist there’s little about this issue that’s of noticeable mention.

Matt Triano has been doing a fabulous job of the art on this series, as though the quality has been a little inconsistent from time to time, the overall quality has been relatively high. This proves the same in this issue, with the fluid layouts and enticing character expressions allowing for an engaging experience. His portrayal of Hell also once again proves eye catching, with the concept of God changing appearance to suit the eye of the beholder being very clever. The colours also once again work well alongside Triano’s art, with Mark Roberts‘ palette adding a dark, yet vivid tone to this tale.

The Devilers may not be the best series to grace our comic book stands, but it continues to be an enthralling tale of good and evil. Giving great developments and engaging interactions it also proves very dramatic, with there being a very memorable twist. Recommended.
