The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage #2 Review

Can this thrill once more? Read on to find out.

The official description from Valiant:

Descent and peril!

Leaving her mortal body in deadly danger, the spirit of Dr. Mirage is about to enter the afterlife’s web of worlds, and begin the fight to win back a partner she thought she’d lost forever. But enemies lie in wait everywhere, and while demons and beasts besiege Mirage in the spirit world, an unexpected new eruption of evil threatens her life on Earth!

DRMIRAGE_002_002Taking us deep into the world of the occult, The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage has quickly proven to be a diverse addition to the Valiant range. Despite this the second issue doesn’t captivate on the same level as the first, with the sheer volume of content leaving some questionable moments that prove a little confusing.

Jen Van Meter‘s scripts have done a fabulous job of taking us into the world of Doctor Mirage, with the mixture of her past personality and current one showing some contrasts. It is however the way that Van Meter shows Mirage’s background that really intrigued me, with the developments giving more depth to her character. Despite this, the overindulgence of information does prove a little overpowering, being hard to follow at times.

The standout feature in this issue has to be the artwork, with the rough, yet detailed visuals of Roberto De La Torre being as mesmerizing as it was first time round. Having lavish, yet fluid layouts De La Torre’s art manages to glide along the page, with the sketch like texture adding extra depth. He also delivers some wonderful monster designs, with the gruesome beasts working wonderfully in this world of the occult. Adding a soft, yet gritty overtone, David Baron‘s colours also manage to give atmosphere to this tale, working fantastically alongside De La Torre’s illustrations.

The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage #2 may not have captivated as much as the first issue, being a little confusing at times, but it still proves intriguing enough. It also gives a deeper look into the character of Mirage, and due to this it comes recommended.
