Guardians of the Galaxy #15 Review

Fifteen issues in does this title still hold enough power to garner the attention and praise of both fanboys and fangirls? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• With the entire galaxy gunning for the Guardians and Peter Quill missing, its time to bring in a little help. Captain Marvel JOINS the Guardians of the Galaxy!

• But where in the universe is Star-Lord? And what does his disappearance mean for the safety of earth?!

Guardians of the Galaxy 15_Preview PageOur heroes are in dire straits. Separated and alone each member of this interstellar motley crew stand ill-equipped to face down some serious obstacles in the way. As the narrative barrels forward we see the seeds born from the original decree made from the King of Spartax come to fruition in a tale that’s going to test the limits of these galactic players.

Brian Michael Bendis from the first page to the final panel plays out several nightmare scenarios. From Rocket Raccoon on the operating table to Gamora left at the mercy of the Brotherhood of the Badoon and even Venom lost and alone there’s plenty of plot points tossed in the air. To be honest this feels like a set-up piece because we don’t see a whole lot of forward movement for any of our heroes. The author instead elects to give us enough groundwork to prepare the way for what’s in store via next month’s outing.

The illustrations by Nick Bradshaw and Cameron Stewart do enough to support the text but they never really elevate the overall quality of it. I honestly found several of the panels to be largely complimentary but when the climax drew close a few of the pages seemed a bit off from the rest. Even so the bulk of the display did a solid job engaging an audience on a visual level. Add in the colors by Justin Ponsor and there’s plenty to be impressed by.

Guardians of the Galaxy #15 doesn’t do anything more than set-up what’s coming, but trust me this creative team does it in a way that easily earns a recommendation.
