Grimm Tales of Terror 2_Variant CoverThe first time I heard about this new series I was absolutely ecstatic. One of the industry leaders in the horror genre tackling the type of monthly procedural that’s largely been absent from local comic shops, instantly peeked my interest. And I’m happy to report that with two issues in this title dances with terror while offering just enough narrative wealth, and minor universe relevance, to earn a spot on just about anyone’s pull-list.

Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco work with scribe Shane McKenzie to bring about this absolutely engaging tale. Our intrepid author takes two stories with a hint of Keres, the Goddess of Death, and gives us something that’s just capital. We have sons in pursuit of their father, an aged but nonetheless hard-nosed collector and a greedy man obsessed with a legendary treasure. The best part is that they’re all in the cross-hairs of their own demons. And this is one body of text that makes sure that their divergent paths find common ground among a series of unfortunate events.

The illustrations by Przemyslaw Klosin largely compliment the written word. There were a few moments where the pencil strokes washed the page in too much detail, but thanks in large part to the colors by Fran Gamboa, the book enjoys a dynamic look. And it’s through a somewhat aged rendition that the entire affair finds some legitimacy. And, in my opinion, that is the single most important thing for this portion of the comic to conquer.

Grimm Tales of Terror #2 is a fun one-and-done outing that should please plenty of eager fans who happen to be invested in this genre. There are some issues within but it’s rather a rare treat when horror is this good. So needless to say it comes recommended.
