Grimm Fairy Tales vs. Wonderland #4 Review

Will there be hope or fear when the dust settles? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Now that the Queen of Spade, the last of the Jabberwocky’s minions, has been killed, it seems that Wonderland has finally found peace. The newly crowed White Queen has teamed with Sela Mathers to heal those afflicted by the realm’s madness. However, the Ace of Spades, an evil card soldier with the power of a highborn, has returned to Wonderland to claim the realm in the name of the Dark Horde!

GFT vs Wonderland 4_Variant CoverIt would be easy to take one look at this book and wonder why it needed to be four issues long. But for me, as a fan of this corner of the Grimm Fairy Tales universe, I walked away from its finale with a smile and hopeful attitude as it sets up things to come. But more importantly the creative team allows enough room for personality to come through and even a sense of unity.

Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco work with script writer Troy Brownfield to offer up a conclusion that leaves a fitting tie between our Guardian of the Nexus and the current ruler of Wonderland. And as fans no doubt flip through its pages the author makes sure that the tension with the villain remains strong. As action ensues in a fairly quick script, we see a journey that knows its own limitations but strives to be something more. And it’s in that regard that the entire outing feels like a downright success.

I was positively enthused as the visuals by Luca Claretti from beginning to end wowed me with precision. Each panel came off as something that was wholly intended, with pencil strokes that offered up lightly rendered characters and creatures but made sure that their reactions matched the tempo of the saga. And with dynamic colors by Leonardo Paciarotti the entire comic book gets a look that’s second to none, and more than worthy of Calie Liddle and Sela Matthers.

Grimm Fairy Tales vs. Wonderland #4 is imperfect fun that absolutely knows what its audience wants. And thanks to the strengths of a very sturdy creative team, it’s abundantly clear that the future of this shared space is bound to offer excitement and terror that’s going to be worth a spot on your ever growing pull-list. In other words this outing easily earns a recommendation.
