Grimm Fairy Tales presents Warlord of Oz #2 Review

Should we really care about this faraway land? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

There is a new evil in Oz, and it is greater even than that of the wicked witches. When Dorothy is called back into the realm that she once saved, she will find out a secret about her power that she may not be ready to accept. As her destiny looms in Emerald City, the Warlord begins his plan to send it all to hell.

GFT Warlord of Oz 2_Variant CoverAs second issues go this one’s not bad at all, as we see the various pieces move across a chessboard that’s looking a few casualties and some head on collisions. This odyssey continues to grow in scope, as this creative team plays their cards close to their chest. In short: despite some minor hiccups there’s a lot of good work being done within the confines of this comic book.

Joe Brusha works with script writer Jeff Massey to bring this tale involving the mystical land of Oz to life. For those unfamiliar with the basics, this a warped rendition of the fabled land but one that inspires insight as political intrigue and magical forces muster for attack. It’s through the power of the words on the page that we see the latest journey of Dorothy Gale take shape, even though the odds are not in our heroine’s favor. On top of that there were a couple instances where the narrative felt a bit flat.

The illustrations handed in by Miguel Mendonca perfectly suits the yarn but I’ll be frank some of the chosen stances for our female protagonist seemed a bit too exaggerated. Even so the renditions found in these panels complement the text well enough to never distract from the events at hand. Add in the colors done by Grostieta and the book boasts a strong visual component that matches what fans have come to expect.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Warlord of Oz #2 is a capable extension that does what it needs to in order to keep its audience and push forward. It earns a recommendation.
